A special tribunal in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, sentenced ousted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to death in absentia on Monday for crimes against humanity committed during the country's protests last July. Former Interior Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal was also sentenced to death, while former National Police Inspector General Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun was sentenced to five in prison in the same case. Judge Md. Golam Mortuza Mozumder began reading parts of the verdict in a packed courtroom. The 78-year-old former prime minister was accused of ordering a violent police response to student protests, which led to her ouster from power last year. While Sheikh Kamal remains at large, his co-accused Mamun, currently in custody, pleaded guilty and became the first witness for the tribunal since its establishment in 2010.
