Reuters witnesses said residents in Dhaka fled their homes as buildings shook and some temporary structures collapsed. According to authorities, residents of eastern Indian states bordering Bangladesh also felt tremors, but there were no immediate reports of damage. The U.S. Geological Survey said the earthquake's epicenter was in the city of Narayanganj, about 40 km from the capital, Dhaka. The German Research Centre for Geosciences reported that a magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck Bangladesh on Friday.
