Bangladesh Ferry Tragedy

A tragedy unfolded on the Meghna River on December 27 when two passenger ferries collided head‑on, killing at least ten people and leaving dozens injured. Local authorities confirmed the initial death toll. The accident took place in Chandpur district, about 115 kilometers from Dhaka.

The collision occurred during a dense fog that severely limited visibility. Many passengers were sleeping when the ferries struck, complicating immediate evacuation efforts.

"A large part of the passengers were sleeping when the accident happened," said magistrate Md Nazmul Islam Sarker. Rescue teams transported the injured to nearby medical centers while awaiting an official report on the survivors' condition.

Such river accidents often reignite debates over passenger transport safety in Bangladesh and the need for better navigation systems in extreme weather.
